Why study languages? Another language connects students to a wider world and to see themselves as part of a global community; develops important thinking and problem-solving skills; builds confidence; is a discipline that develops academic and scholastic skills; is fun and challenging

In Year 10 Italian, students will continue to use a range of everyday language both orally and in writing to exchange information about their personal, social, and local experiences and extend their language to communicate about broader issues. They make comparisons and contrasts and offer reasons for points of view, opinions, and preferences. They express desires and plans. They give presentations, formulating and responding to a range of questions. They analyse texts, noticing features such as tone, sequences, and relationships of events in time. Students also become increasingly aware of issues relating to translating between Italian and English and recognise that concepts are not readily translated, from Italian to English and vice versa.

At VCE level, students who study a language may qualify for the VCE Baccalaureate if they also meet requirements in English and Mathematics.

* It is assumed that students who are considering VCE Italian will complete both semesters 1 and 2 Italian in Year 10.
