Year 10 Physical Education electives
The Human Body
Advisor: Mr Liam Holmes
In this unit students will examine the musculoskeletal system of the human body and how the muscles and bones work together to produce movement. They will also examine the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of the human body and how the heart, blood vessels and lungs function at rest and during physical activity. Finally, they will investigate how the capacity and functioning of the muscular, skeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems may act as an enabler or barrier to participation in physical activity and consider a variety of legal and illegal practices and substances used to enhance performance of each system. Through practical activities, students will explore the major components of the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems and their contributions and interactions during physical activity, sport, and exercise.
In this unit, students will explore how the human body’s musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems work together to support movement, health, and performance. Through inquiry-based learning and real-world scenarios, students will investigate how these systems respond to physical activity and how their capacity can either enable or limit participation in sport and exercise.
Students will apply critical thinking and collaboration to examine contemporary issues such as the ethical use of performance-enhancing substances and the impact of legal and illegal practices on athlete health and fairness in sport. They will engage in hands-on practical activities and use data analysis to understand how body systems interact during movement, and how this knowledge can be used to improve performance, prevent injury, and promote lifelong physical activity.
By connecting scientific understanding to real-world challenges—such as designing inclusive fitness programs or evaluating the role of technology in sports performance—students will develop problem-solving, communication, and digital literacy skills essential for thriving in the 21st century.
Enhancing Physical Performance
Advisor: Mr Liam Holmes
Enhancing Physical Performance draws upon a range of key knowledge and key skills from the VCE PE program. The content covered within this course will look specifically at practical methods that can be implemented to ‘Enhance Physical Performance’. These include fitness components and testing, training principles and methods, nutrition, skill acquisition and biomechanical principles. Practical applications of the theoretical content being covered make up most of the practical lessons.
In this course, you’ll learn how to improve physical performance by exploring real strategies used in sport, fitness, and health. You’ll dive into topics like fitness testing, training methods, nutrition, skill development, and how the body moves using biomechanical principles.
Some lessons will be hands-on, giving you the chance to apply what you learn in practical ways—like designing training plans, analysing movement, and solving real problems athletes face. You’ll work in teams, think critically, and use technology to track progress and make smart decisions.
By the end of the unit, you’ll understand how to boost performance safely and ethically, and you’ll build important skills like communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and creative thinking—skills that are useful not just in sport, but in life.
